Why Is the Ocean Salty?
"Where does the salt in the ocean come from?"
💡 Simple Explanation
Rain slowly wears down rocks on land, carrying tiny bits of salt and minerals into rivers. Rivers flow to the ocean, bringing all that salt along. When ocean water evaporates to become rain again, the salt gets left behind - it can't float up into clouds. Over billions of years, more and more salt has collected in the ocean. It's like making soup and letting the water boil away - what's left keeps getting saltier and saltier!
🎉 Fun Fact!
If you could take all the salt out of the ocean, it would cover all the land 500 feet deep!
