Why Do We Get Hiccups?
"What causes those funny 'hic' sounds?"
💡 Simple Explanation
Under your lungs is a big muscle called the diaphragm that helps you breathe. Sometimes this muscle gets irritated and twitches - maybe from eating too fast, drinking bubbly drinks, or just randomly! When it twitches, it makes you suck in air super quickly. But your voice box slams shut to stop the air - and that makes the 'hic!' sound. Each hiccup makes your diaphragm twitch again, which is why hiccups keep coming until your muscle calms down!
🎉 Fun Fact!
The longest case of hiccups lasted 68 years! A man named Charles Osborne hiccupped for most of his life.
